African Women in photography

Born in Kabylie, a mountainous region northern Algeria in 1991, Dihia Taleb discovered photography while studying in Paris. It was a way for her to connect to the new environment she was in.

Back in Algeria she started questioning herself about the space that is dedicated for her as a woman in a country where somehow they are still under men's dependency. This led her to seek other stories of women whether suffering from men power or others who succeeded to create a form of autonomy and independence. Thus, she has been looking for places or events where women are able to meet,discuss about their lives, sing or dance and simply express themselves. First, she had this idea to go regularly to mausoleums where women are used to meeting in order to celebrate religious rites. She performs always in black and white, the only way for her to translate her vision of the world.

Now, she lives between Algeria and France and aims to create through photography a bridge between these two geographic areas and continue her photographic autopsy about women and space.

Sonia lives and works in Algeria.

She studied Fashion design in London, photography has always been an important tool for her research and the presentation of her projects. After taking up fashion design internships in London and New York following her graduation, she returned to Algiers where she works in styling and photography.

Her work has been exhibited many times in Algeria and abroad, notably in Paris, Marseille, London,Barcelona and New York.

Asmaa Waguih is an Egyptian photojournalist and a reporter who covers conflict and politics in the Middle East. Her work is focused on politics and conflict in the Arab world and the Islamic community. She's currently based in Turkey.

Doaa’s interest in photojournalism and documentation focuses on people and their stories, especially women's issues.

Upper Egypt is a very conservative society where working in photojournalism is very difficult for a woman; she is trying to change people’s views towards women as journalists. She is a a member of APJD and Women Photograph. She participated in a Nikon contest for photography in 2016 and got third place. Her work has been published in Katt30, DPA-international, VII academy, El-Shorouk news, and Daily News Egypt.

Fatma Fahmy (b. 1991, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) is a documentary photographer, focusing on daily life, based in Cairo. She focuses her attention on capturing daily life in Arab countries, in particular the Egyptian society. She focuses particularly on societies that are still holding and preserving on to their ancient and old traditional roots. Thorough her lens she wishes to amplifies such historical and environmental bonds. Fatma makes use of ethnographic photography practices in the process of creating visual narratives; creating an image that mimics the memory of the place and its people.

She was the recipient of the Daniele Tamagni Grant at the Market Photo Workshop which assisted her to join the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Programme 2020. She was nominated for the World Press Photo Joop Swart masterclass in 2018. Her work has been exhibited internationally including at the Cite International des Arts in Paris and the Photographic Angel Exhibition in the UK.

Fatma is based in Cairo, Egypt and available for assignments worldwide.

Hadeer Mahmoud is an Egyptian photojournalism and documentary photographer.

She graduated in 2012 from Ain Shams University, where she studies Law. Joining "El- Tahrir" newspaper (a local Egyptian newspaper) in June 2011 was her first step into photojournalism. She covered many important stories regarding the Egyptian revolution; strikes, protests and clashes. In March 2012 Hadeer joined "Al-Watan" Newspaper until February 2019.

Lina Geoushy is an Egyptian photographic artist working across the spectrum of social documentary and portrait photography. She aims to tell stories that deconstruct and question the public's perception of the prevailing power of patriarchy.

Her practice is research-led and her projects are both self-initiated and commissioned. Her photography is a process of intuitive connections and collaborations with people that serve to empower them, providing a platform to tell their stories.

Lina completed her MA in Photojournalism & Documentary Photography at London College of Communication. Her work largely explores gender politics and women empowerment issues. She strives to push the boundaries through her work by exploring rarely documented communities and ineffable topics.

She has been a recipient of numerous awards and commissions by BJP 1854, Lens Culture, Die Zeit, IPE 163, Photoworks, Landskrona, Vice Arabia, Vice UK, and Phmuseum. Shame Less was shortlisted for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. Lina was selected as one of the 2022 Foam Talents, and she was awarded the Documentary Photographer of The Year 2019 by The Royal Photographic Society for her Breadwinners series.

Mennatalah Khaled is a photographer and filmmaker born and based in Egypt. In 2021, after graduating with a Computer Science degree from Alexandria University, she decided to turn photography into her principal career. Her first multimedia project “But you won’t notice” was funded by AFAC, Prince Claus Fund and Magnum Foundation, and the short creative documentary was made in the frame of the creative documentary workshop organized by the Between Women Filmmakers Caravan.

From conceptual portraits to street and documentary photography, Menna's work explores different mediums to conceptualize and capture intangible elements of humankind, such as unfolded fears, dreams and feelings.

Zeinab El Tawil, is an Egyptian visual artist and photographer born and raised in Cairo. Ever since she was young, she knew her passion was to work in the creative industry. Imane Djamil (b.1996, in Casablanca, Morocco) is a Casablanca-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans photography, performance, storytelling, and creative-writing. Her work straddles a very fine line between reality and the sublime in what she calls ‘mental geographies,’ where contingent and cross-cultural worlds interpenetrate through a strategy of narrative assemblage to create new topographies. Her work, which is located at the crossroads of intimate autofiction and visual tales, explores places in ‘post-traumatic transition,’ where History engenders a metaphorical dialogue with personal and political anecdotes. As a nomad, it is in her practice where she finds refuge to poetically inhabit ephemeral spaces.

Djamil has participated in several residencies including Escales liées at The French Pavililon of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018, Mujeres y el Mediterráaneo in 2019 at the Casa Mediterraneo in Alicante, Spain in 2019, and most recently the the Summer’s Lab at le Cube- Independent Art Room in Rabat, Morocco in 2020. Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and Morocco, most notably as part of Le Maroc Contemporain at Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, France in 2014 and, En un instante, Marruecos at the Casa Arabe as part of PhotoESPAÑA’s official selection in 2018.

Arwa Ahmed Hassan is an architect and a photographer based in Khartoum, Sudan. Specializing in portrait & street photography. Her area of interest is “human trail” as she call it, whether it’s a portrait, a body part or merely a shadow. Her passion for photography started from a young age when she held her father’s film camera for the first time. Has been a member of Sudanese photographers Group since 2015.

Suha Barakat is a Sudanese photographer. She graduated as a geologist and became interested in photography 2012, she is a self-taught and enthusiastic street photographer, who is passionate about documentary and portraits photography.

She is a co-founder of Sudanese Photographers Association. 2013 She joined photo workshop “ where the Nile meets '' which was Sudanese photographers group in collaboration with invisible borders 2013, she’s working on many long term project Sudanese multicultural details.

She started documenting the first civil uprisings in 2013 and the Sudanese uprising from December in 2018 until the topple of the regime on April 2019.

She participated in an exhibition about Sudanese revolution 2021 Arles photo festival, France.

Now, she is participating in a TOV mentorship program in collaboration with through lens collective under the name of CHANGE.
